SODIUM PCA
Natural Moisturizing Factor

Sodium PCA is one of the substances skin naturally uses to keep itself hydrated. It is an important component of the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor, or NMF—the water-binding system within the outermost layer of the skin that helps maintain softness, flexibility and healthy hydration. When Natural Moisturizing Factor becomes depleted, skin doesn't simply feel dry. It can become tight, rough, flaky and less flexible, and fine dehydration lines can appear more pronounced. This depletion can occur with age, low humidity, harsh cleansing, over-exfoliation and other forms of barrier stress.
Sodium PCA is an exceptionally effective humectant, meaning it attracts and binds water within the upper layers of the skin. Rather than creating the temporary sensation of moisture on the surface, it helps replenish one of the same moisture-binding components naturally found in healthy skin.
For dehydrated, tight or rough-feeling skin, that means something you can both see and feel: skin becomes softer, smoother and more supple, tightness is relieved, and fine lines caused or exaggerated by dehydration can appear less noticeable. Better-hydrated surface cells also reflect light more evenly, helping dull skin regain a fresher, plumper and more luminous appearance.
What makes Sodium PCA particularly valuable is that it isn't trying to make skin behave differently. It helps replenish part of the natural hydration system skin already relies on to stay comfortable, flexible and beautifully hydrated.
