BURITI OIL

Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil

Buriti Oil, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil

Deep within Brazil’s Amazon and Cerrado wetlands grows the Buriti palm, a towering palm so closely associated with water that its presence can signal an oasis in an otherwise dry landscape. Known in Brazil as the “tree of life,” Mauritia flexuosa produces clusters of extraordinary reddish-brown fruits covered in scales, concealing brilliant golden-orange flesh underneath. From that fruit comes Buriti Oil—an intensely colored botanical oil that remains relatively unfamiliar in Western skincare despite an exceptional composition.

Its color is the first clue.Buriti is extraordinarily rich in carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, the same family of protective pigments responsible for the saturated orange and gold of some of nature's most vividly colored plants. It also contains tocopherols, phenolic compounds and phytosterols, creating a concentrated antioxidant profile that gives Buriti far more significance than its rarity alone.

For skin, those antioxidants matter. UV exposure, pollution and environmental stress create oxidative damage that contributes to collagen degradation and visible photoaging, eventually appearing as fine lines, crepey texture, loss of firmness, unevenness and dullness. Buriti's remarkable carotenoid content helps defend skin against that oxidative stress, and the oil has been studied in connection with photo-oxidative damage and UV-related skin stress.

Buriti also contains a high proportion of oleic acid, giving this exotic oil a deeply conditioning quality. On dry or mature body skin, it helps replenish depleted surface lipids and restore the softness and flexibility that gradually disappear when skin becomes chronically dry. Its botanical compounds have also demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity, bringing another layer of support to skin exposed to environmental stress.

This makes Buriti particularly beautiful for the places where we often see aging first but rarely treat with the same sophistication as the face: the décolletage, shoulders, arms, hands and legs. Skin that has become dry, sun-exposed, crepey or less resilient feels richer and more supple; rough texture appears smoother, and the surface takes on a healthier, more luminous quality. And perhaps the most luxurious thing about Buriti is that its extraordinary color isn't ornamental. The deep golden-orange pigment is the botanical itself. The carotenoids responsible for that spectacular color are also part of the antioxidant chemistry that makes Buriti so valuable to the skin.

For generations, communities in Brazil have valued the Buriti palm for food, oil, fibers and traditional uses. Today, its fruit gives J21 one of the most unusual ingredients in The Signature Body Butter™: an exotic Amazonian botanical chosen for its exceptional beta-carotene content, antioxidant defense, anti-inflammatory activity, lipid nourishment and relationship with environmentally stressed, photoaged skin.

A rare golden oil from Brazil's “tree of life,” created by nature to protect one of its most extraordinary fruits—and chosen by J21 to lavish that same richness on the skin.
